MONASTERIES
The monastery of Archangel Michael ThassosThe monastery of Archangel Michael is located near the peripheriakos road.It is just before the village Aleke and on the way a you’re heading towards the city of Thasos. It is dedicated to the protector of the island, Archangel Michael and is used as a hermitage for nuns. This hermitage is spiritually dependent on the monastery Filotheou of the Holy Mount Athos. In the monastery they keep a piece of “Τιμίου Ύλου” ,that is a piece of one of the nails that were used in the crossing of Christ. It is the grace of God upon this relic that summons up a great number of pilgrims. Every year the second day of Easter, pilgrims (mainly from the village Theologos)carry the icon of the Saint from the place of this holy relic in Metochi(a little church of the monastery Theologos),to the monastery of the Archangel. They will sleep there for the night and the next day they'll carry the icon back, but this time through a very difficult path in the mountains.
The monastery of Panagouda is close to the road that leads to the mountain village Maries and is surrounded by many olive trees and pine trees. It is said that some time in the past, the icon of the Virgin Mary was stolen by pirates from the east and many unfortunate locals were slaughtered. Many years later, a woman dressed in black and with a bright halo around her, appeared in the dream of a young shepherd and suggested him that a church should be built wherever the miraculus icon would be found. When the young man wake up something strange happened...not far from his position, behind a bush,he could clearly smell myrrh. Curious as he was about the smell,he searched behind the bush and there he was, standing in awe in front of the miraculus icon. Thus, that particular spot was chosen for the new monastery. Nowadays only few monks live in the monastery and every year ,on the day dedicated to the Virgin Mary(15th of August),pilgrims come to pray to the icon.
The monastery of Saint Panteleimon is located approximately in the centre of the island and you reach it only through two roads. The one starts from Kazaviti and the other from Maries. Both roads are quiet rough.
It is located in the centre of the harbor, of the city Thasos. It is actually the city's most recognizable site. It's a two-storied building of the 19th century and nowadays holds many diverse cultural events.
