From antiquity to our days, Thasos has been a dynamic centre of apiculture. At the lovely forests of pine-trees, there live thousands swarms of bees. The Thasian Apiculture Guild, which numbers around 100 bee-keepers, is located in the region of Prinos. This guild has been working for 25 years. Its purpose is to gather honey from honey-producers,to package it and sell it to the greek and foreign market.
he gradual decline of vine cultivation in the island has led to a significant decrease of wine production. Nowadays in Thasos the production of wine is very limited. The golden age of Thasian wine was mainly considered to be the byzantine age, but it was also very famous throughout the classical and hellenistic ages. The recipe for the production of Thasian wine can be found in an ancient tome called “Γεωπονικά”.This tome is an agricultural manual of the 10th century, but it is certain that the actual technic of making the wine is much older. From ancient times wine had a great impact on the economy of the island and that can be seen from marble inscriptions that had laws related to wine usage and trade.
In the 2nd century B.C. the trading of Thasian wine slowly deteriorates to the benefit of other centres of production, such as Rhodes,Knedos,Kos and some Ionian coastal cities (in Asia Minor),which produce wine of low quality.
At the end of the 18th century olive trees replace the vineyards. The olive oil becomes a very essential nutritional component in the diet of Thasians.Due to its unique composition, olive oil has remarkable beneficial properties.Especially its high concetration mostly in elaic acid.
Boiled sweets are common throughout Greece, but in Thasos they make them with high quality thasian honey. Thus all thasian sweets have a very distinct and unique flavour. The most known boiled sweet is made with walnut (karidaki). There are other made with figs and zucchinies. They are sold in many stores and even locals make a quality supply that can sell you!
